In the tale of Blanke Hans, we meet Charlotte, who has returned to the Wadden Sea area after many years away. Her return awakens her memories of a beloved maternal grandfather and a life in a world that exists between ebb and tide, between mudflats and tidal marsh; and between life and death.

Charlotte takes the listener on a journey back to her childhood and the distinctive nature and culture of the Wadden Sea, an area where people have stubbornly insisted on dwelling for centuries, despite the ever present threat of the storm surges from the sea. As a heathland farmer, Charlotte's grandfather was very aware of nature and its whims and Charlotte’s many walks in the landscape gave her an intimate relationship with the area. Not only is Blanke Hans a tale of a touching reunion with the Wadden Sea, it is also a tale that is pertinent to the current climate debate, and thus the challenges that lie ahead in the future.

The tour starts at the Vadehavscentret and guides the listener through woodland and tidal marshland, up along the dyke and right out to the borderlands between sea and land. All that you need to enjoy this tale is your mobile phone, headphones and the Useeum app. You can also download the audio tour in advance, but it can only be played during your visit to the Vadehavscentret. We recommend that you wear practical footwear and weather-appropriate clothing before setting out on the tour.
