The birdlife in and around the mudflats is unique in several ways. Many birds migrate long distances each year and the Wadden Sea acts as a resting place for several million waders. In the autumn, the starlings dance and in the spring several rare birds breed on Mandø. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned bird watcher, we have a trip for you.
Experience the breeding birds on Mandø. Some of the birds that breed here are sandpipers, robins and grebes, but also rarer breeding species such as the great common woodcock and brush crane.
Join us on a wading bird trip! The tour starts with a presentation in the WaddenSea Center, of birds that we hope to see. Hereafter we drive to one of the locks with telescopes and binoculars. Hopefully we will see a wide selection of wading birds.
We start at the Wadden Sea Centre with a brief introduction to bird watching with binoculars. Then we walk together to the dike and the Wadden Sea 700 metres away to see if we can spot any birds. How many different species can you find? How can you identify a bird correctly, even when it is backlit? And what is typical of our wading birds? Back at the Wadden Sea Centre, we will dissect a bird in one of our nature schools and discover the anatomical adaptations to life in the air.
Please bring your own binoculars. You can also borrow some from us. All equipment for the bird dissection is provided by the Wadden Sea Centre.
